This summer’s destructive bushfires have devastated individuals, families and communities across Australia. Many of those affected may be experiencing mental health issues as a result. However, it’s very important to note that if you have been affected, support is available to you.
With bushfires ravaging large parts of Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and elsewhere, public and private groups are providing much needed mental health support to affected individuals. These groups aim to help those who suffered directly and indirectly as a result of the fires, both now and after the fires.
If you or someone you know has been affected by the fires, the following groups are available to help:
- Beyond Blue: One of Australia’s best known mental health charities, Beyond Blue have developed guidelines for those affected by natural disasters. You can also access their online chat service or call them directly on 1300 224 636.
- SANE Australia: This national mental health charity provide important information on the mental health impacts of the bushfires. The SANE Help Centre is open from Monday-Friday with counsellors available on phone, email and an online chat service. You can call them directly on 1800 18 7263.
- Head to Health: Operated by the Department of Health, this online portal offers a range of web-based services for those affected by mental health issues.
- Health Direct: This government-funded service provide information on mental health services and professionals. They also provide 24 health advice on 1800 022 222.
It’s also important to note that your local General Practitioner (GP) can assist you and/or refer you to a mental practitioner if necessary. However, if you or someone you know is in need of urgent help, please call the emergency services on 000.
